In order to be able to legally work in Costa Rica foreigners must have a working permit (working visa). Such visa may be obtained before actually entering Costa Rica by requesting the visa at the nearest COSTA RICAN CONSULATE or; obtained once the foreigner has entered Costa Rica.

If the petitioner decides to go for the second option, he must submit all paperwork to Immigration within 3 months of his entrance to Costa Rica. Working permits might be granted for period between 3 to 12 months. Once the permit expires it may be renewed for an equal period of time.
    Working Permit Requirements:
  • Request letter and request letter issued by the employee.
  • Request Form (provided by the Immigration General Direction).
  • Four pictures ("passport size").
  • Registration of fingerprints before the Public Security Ministry.
  • Certification of the Costa Rican Social Security, indicating that the EMPLOYER has NO pending debts on Social Security Payments.
  • Legal capacity certificate of employer and photocopies of the representative's passport or I.D. document.
  • Certified copies of all the pages of the employee's passport. Translation of the passport.
  • Certified copies of the Titles (or education certificates) of the employee (if applicable).
  • Employment Contract.
  • US$ Guarantee Deposit.100
  • Incorporation on Professional Association (if applicable).
